| Project Title: The Use of Wider Longitudinal Pavement Markings in the United States and World Sponsor: American Glass Bead Association Principle Investigator: Tim Gates Research Staff: Gene Hawkins TTI Project Number: 400241 Start Date: 4/7/01 End Date: 2/28/02 Abstract: Over the past two decades, as more knowledge has been gained about driver visibility needs and the aging driver population trends, some highway agencies have begun to use longitudinal pavement markings that are wider than the 4-inch minimum for standard centerline, edgeline or laneline applications. The overall goal of this study was to combine the current agency usage of wider markings in the United States, Canada and worldwide with the technical literature to provide a comprehensive report detailing the use of wider markings and the benefits that they provide. As part of the research task, a survey of roadway agencies in the United States and Canada was administered in summer 2001. The survey has revealed that a number of these agencies have implemented wider pavement markings, many within the past decade. The research includes an assessment of the extent of wider marking usage, reasons for using wider markings, the benefits they provide, and basis for implementation as reported by agency personnel and research publications. Conclusions and suggestions will be made as to the use of wider markings by highway agencies and future research endeavors. A portion of the research will be presented at the TRB annual meeting in January 2002. |
