TRB 2004

Validation of Photometric Modeling Techniques for Retroreflective Traffic Signs (TRB Paper No. 04-3287), Carlson, Urbanik. This presentation summarizes a systematic validation of photometric modeling results using field measurements made under conditions identical to those which were modeled. The findings showed that photometric modeling techniques of nighttime traffic sign performance compare well with field measurements made under identical conditions. The maximum illuminance difference was 16 percent and was attributed to the pavement reflection properties. The maximum luminance difference was only 2.4 percent. The retroreflective performance of traffic signs redirects most of the pavement reflection back toward the pavement. Therefore, the modeled luminance estimates are not as affected as the modeled illuminance estimates (PDF file 2.1 MB)


TRB 2003

Developing Updated Minimum In-Service Retroreflectivity Values for Traffic Signs, Carlson, Hawkins, Schertz, Mace, and Opiela. This is a TRB paper that describes the research that was conducted in order to update the minimum retroreflectivity levels for traffic signs. The Use of Wider Longitudinal Pavement Markings, Presenter, Tim Gates. This presentation summarizes the findings from a 2001 agency survey and literature search investigating the use of long-line pavement markings in the U.S. and Canada that are wider than 4 inches. Presented are: agencies using wider lines, line types that are wider, roadways where they are used, reasons for using, basis for implementation, and benefits associated with their use as reported by agencies and literature. Yellow Transition Lane Control Signal Symbols for Freeway Traffic Management, Presenter, Melisa Finley. This presentation summarizes the research performed to assess the effectiveness and applicability of diagonal and downward yellow arrows (non-standard lane control signal symbols) for freeway traffic management purposes. Sequential Warning Light System for Work Zone Lane Closures, Presenter, Melisa Finley. This presentation summarizes the research performed to assess the effectiveness of a flashing warning light system for use at work zone lane closures. Real-Time Offset Tuning: Motivation, Findings, and Lessons Learned, Presenter, Montasir M. Abbas. This presentation highlights the advantages of real-time offset tuning that bridges the gap between widely installed closed-loop systems and fully adaptive control systems. The presentation shows the results of applying Purdue Real-time Offset Transitioning Algorithm (PRO-TRACTS) to two different case study networks. The presentation shows some of the cycle transitioning issues and the pros and cons of using hardware-in-the-loop versus CORSIM’s internal control algorithm. Dr. Abbas developed PRO-TRACTS while pursuing his Ph.D. at Purdue University under the supervision of Professor Darcy Bullock. (Packaged Powerpoint file 3.0 MB)

Interpretations Of Time-related Dynamic Message Sign Messages By Texas Drivers Presenter, Conrad Dudek This presentation summarizes the research results of four studies related to time-related dynamic message sign (DMS) messages. Included are the findings from human factors laboratory studies conducted in Texas to determine those messages that best convey time-related information required and desired by motorists in Texas. Evaluation of Clearview Alphabet on Guide Signs with Prismatic Sheeting Presenter, Paul Carlson This presentation provides an overview of a TxDOT-sponsored project. The main objective of the project was to evaluate the legibility performance of the ClearviewOne alphabet on shoulder-mounted and overhead guide signs fabricated with microprismatic retroreflective sheeting.
